AI Overviews

Google's AI-generated answer summary that sits above the traditional results and cites a handful of sources.

Updated May 2026Definition
The short answer

AI Overviews are Google’s AI-generated answer summaries that appear at the top of the search results page for many queries, synthesising a response from multiple web sources and citing a handful of them with links. They are Google’s most visible move into the answer layer: instead of sending the searcher straight to a list of links, the page leads with a generated answer and names the sources it drew from. For site owners, AI Overviews matter because they sit above your organic ranking and frequently satisfy the query in place — producing a zero-click result where the citation inside the Overview, not the downstream click, is the prize. Getting cited in an AI Overview is governed by the same forces as the chat assistants: extractable, well-structured, corroborated content — the heart of AEO.

How do AI Overviews work?

When a query triggers one, Google retrieves candidate passages from across the web, generates a synthesised answer, and shows it above the blue links with citations to a small set of sources. Not every query gets an Overview, and the exact triggering and source selection evolve continually — but the pattern is consistent: a generated answer plus a short, linked source list.

How are AI Overviews different from a chat assistant?

The mechanic is the same family — retrieve, synthesise, cite — but the surface differs. AI Overviews live inside a results page a user reached by searching; generative assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok live inside a conversation. From an optimization standpoint you treat them together: be a source the synthesis can extract from and trust.

How do you get cited in AI Overviews?

The ranking forces are the AEO fundamentals: lead with a clean, self-contained answer; structure with one-question-per-heading; be specific and corroborated. Notably, an Overview can lift a fact from a page ranking below the top few results, so extractability can matter more than position. The detailed list is in AI Overview ranking factors that actually matter in 2026.

How do you know if you’re being cited?

MentionRadar tracks citations across the three chat assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok — so you read your AI citation footprint with reverse AI search against those models. Run the free Domain Check to see the real queries they already cite your domain on. The same extractable, trusted content that earns those citations is what tends to earn AI Overview placements too, so the chat-assistant footprint is a good proxy for where you stand in Google’s answer layer.

Worked example

A user searches “how to remove a coffee stain.” Google shows an AI Overview that summarises the steps and cites two cleaning sites with links, above the usual blue links. The user reads the steps and never clicks — a zero-click outcome — but the two cited sites still gain brand exposure in a prime slot. A cleaning brand’s goal here is not to be the tenth blue link below the fold; it is to be one of those two cited sources inside the Overview itself.

  • Zero-click — the search behaviour AI Overviews make the default.
  • AEO — the discipline of becoming a cited source in the Overview.
  • AI citation — the unit of value an Overview placement delivers.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI Overviews good or bad for my traffic?

Both. They can reduce clicks because users get the answer on the results page, but they also create a new high-visibility slot: if your domain is one of the cited sources, you gain prominent exposure above the traditional results.

Publish clear, well-structured, corroborated answers that are easy to quote, on pages a model can parse — the same AEO work that earns chat citations. See the AI Overview ranking factors guide for the detailed playbook.
